Rabbit Information
A rabbit can be an ideal pet for families and individuals willing to provide a safe and comfortable home giving the animal all it requires to keep it happy and well. They take up quite a lot of room with their hutches and secluded grass areas but the feedback you can receive from them is very rewarding. Rabbits are very social animals and preferably should be kept in a group of 2 or more. It is essential that the pair are either of the same sex or that they have been neutered by a vet to ensure that no unexpected pregnancies occur as females can litter as many as 8 babies in each litter. Rabbits can live up to ten years so deciding to purchase one should be for the long term, therefore realising the cost and space required is essential. A female rabbit is called a "doe" and a male rabbit is called a "buck". Rabbits Require:
● An alternate diet of dry rabbit food, apples, carrots, grass and hay.
● A constant supply of fresh, clean water to drink in a drip feed bottle with a metal spout.
● A large waterproof hutch(cleaned out daily), mounted off the ground away from all the elements. If the weather is too cold then it should be placed in an indoor area.
● A secluded area of grass which is safe and secure. Remember rabbits burrow so this should be taken into consideration when preparing an exercise pen.
● Their coat brushed daily and a gnawing block in their hutch to keep their teeth length down.
More information...
To ensure that rabbits are tamed they need regular handling. To pick up a rabbit you should gently hold the rabbit by the scruff of the neck with one hand and support its hindquarters with the other. Lift the rabbit towards you resting it against your body. It is essential you do not hurt the rabbit by lifting it by the ears or scruff of its neck as you will lose its trust. Put the rabbit down hind first on a non slip surface. To keep your rabbit healthy it should be regularly vaccinated by a vet. Its teeth and claws will require clipping to prevent discomfort. If your rabbit looks quiet or has a loss of appetite the isolate it and seek veterinary advice immediately.
