Parrot Information
Parrots are a very intelligent specie of bird. The most intelligent is probably the African Grey which live in the wild in forests of Africa. These birds often gain the ability to talk if taught but this takes a lot of repetition and attention. They can learn different languages and also voice types. They can learn colours, materials and can even count. With these birds being so intelligent it does not take them long to pick up words. This needs to be understood as you have to be careful what you say around the parrot. The three main types of African Grey are the Congo, this one is light grey with a bright red tail and black beaks. The Timnehs, this one has a maroon tail and reddish beak. Finally the King Jacko, this one has an unusual amount of red feathers. African Grey's can live up to 50 or 60 years. They are about 10-14 inches in length. They can sometimes cause allergic reactions in some people which should be considered when choosing as a pet and also they are sensitive to smoke and strong smells. There are several points which need to be considered when keeping African Grey Parrots. These are:
● An African Grey's cages should be at least 32"W x 32"L x 48"H. They should be covered at night and kept away from drafts, open windows and the kitchen.
● Suitable toys should be available to keep the parrot occupied and perches in the cages should be different sizes and textures to keep the birds feet healthy.
● They should have access to clean distilled water (not tap water) in a bowl and also givena bird bath every 2-3 days
● For feeding they require 3-4 teaspoons a day of pellet or seed based parrot diet. They should also be given bite sized fruit and vegetables such as oranges, melons, apples, sweet potatoes, brocolli, spinach, greens and shredded carrots every 2-3 days. Suitable vitamin and mineral supplements are also advised once a week.
More information...
African Grey parrots can live solitary lives quite happily with good results with the owners attention. They have certain habits which may seem strange but are totally normal such as feather picking. They usually have clean and smooth feather and have a curious and active disposition. They eat throughout the day mainly sitting on their perches. If this is not their usual behaviour then they could be getting sick so vet advice is recommended.
