Budgie Information

A Budgerigar or budgie for short is a breed from the parrot family originating from Austrailia.  They are probably the easiest birds to keep for newcomers and great pets for children.  They are small colourful birds that love to sing and are even quite intelligent.  In rare cases these types of bird can even learn the odd word. They are very friendly animals and are best kept in an aviary with other birds for company.  These types of birds also like to come out of their cage for extra exercise but it is very important that they do not escape into the wild or they may die. Budgie's generally live between 10-12 years and grow to approx 7 inches(18 centimetres) in length.  Some important requirements to follow when owning a budgie can be found below.

● A sufficiently sized aviary or cage which if outside requires nesting boxes to protect them from the elements.

● A constant supply of clean water to drink and extra for bathing.

● A well balanced diet including bird pellets and regular treats of fruit, salad and vegetables.  Budgies also like a cuttlefish bone to peck at and need some grit to aid digestion.

● Branches, toys and a mirror to provide entertainment for the birds.  A wooden perch for each bird is also required for sleeping. Budgies like to perch high up at the same level as other birds in the same cage.

● Allow the budgie regular exercise and interaction with its owner and make sure its cage is cleaned out on a regular basis.

● Check the budgie's beak and claws in case they need clipping and take to a vet if required.

●  Check the bird regularly for any illnesses and take to the vet if they seem under the weather.  If a budgie is pulling its feathers out it is probably because its bored or stressed.  Try to ensure your budgie has lots of toys and space in which to live.

More information...

Budgie's are quite noisy birds so be aware of any effect this may have on your life and your neighbours.  They like to sing and whistle and if in a group this can be quite loud. Budgie's also are quite messy with their food, they should be placed in an area which is easily cleaned. In the wild budgies are very social, they tend to travel in flocks which can be as small as 20 birds or as large as 25000 birds. They are placid, outgoing animals which are generally easy to approach. They feed in the wiild on grass seends, eucalyptus leaves, buds, bark and other greens. A budgie should be housed in a cage with dimensions of 16 inches x 16 inches x 18 inches. If there are more than one then a larger cage is required.
